A crew working with our group left a few adults and larvae of the flat bark beetle species Cucujus clavipes. I keep them in the fridge just in case I need a photo-a-week. . The research has shown that the overwintering larvae of these beetles do not freeze and can survive at -80°C - they supercool. (In Scandinavia a closely related species called Sinoberbille, Cucujus cinnaberinus, is regarded as threatened and are protected). This is a less scientific representation of the adult captured just a few hours ago.
