Week 7: Fake Aurora from Light pollution/ice fog at minus 37°C from Ballaine Lake.

We are into the first cold spell of the year at -38°C or so here in Fairbanks - we actually made a cold record yesterday for that day of the year. While skiing home late from work, at Ballaine Lake I turn around. Aurora blending with light pollution? In the background Orion is chasing after Jupiter that appears to move fast to the right.

I hurry - the D5100 with 12-24mm was placed on my backpack and my hand was used as additional shutter to avoid movement on release. After a few exposures I start thinking: It was just that the aurora was showing off in the wrong direction, and color was not as green as it use to be, and spaceweather.com had not indicated chance for aurora. No, this is points of light pollution somehow being projected up into the ice fog. The ice crystals must behave in a peculiar way. I have seen it before, but never as pronounced as this.
